Water safety is not only a skill. It is a community responsibility.
The 2026 Drowning Rescue Swimming Competition in Dong Nai was more than a sporting event. It was an opportunity for people with different backgrounds, skills and experiences to come together around one important message: learning how to prevent drowning and respond safely in and around water can save lives.
For The Mountain Tribe, this is exactly the kind of community initiative we want to contribute to.
As an outdoor and experiential education provider, we believe that water activities should create meaningful experiences while also developing the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to participate safely.
A competition that brings the community together

The annual Drowning Rescue Swimming Competition provides an important platform for people to learn, practice and demonstrate water rescue skills in a community setting.
This year was particularly meaningful with the introduction of SUP Rescue as part of the competition.
Stand-up paddleboarding has become increasingly popular at lakes, rivers and coastal areas. At the same time, participating in water activities requires more than simply knowing how to paddle. Understanding water conditions, communication, rescue techniques, equipment and personal safety are all important parts of becoming a responsible water user.
Seeing SUP Rescue included in a public community competition created an opportunity to bring these conversations into the spotlight.
It also demonstrated an important principle:
Skills become stronger when communities practice them together.
Why should the competition happen every year?
A drowning prevention campaign should not be limited to a single event.
Holding an annual rescue swimming competition creates a recurring opportunity for the community to:
- Practice water rescue and emergency-response skills
- Encourage swimming and water-safety education
- Introduce different rescue techniques and equipment
- Connect swimmers, paddlers, outdoor practitioners and rescue communities
- Give participants a chance to test their skills in a structured environment
- Encourage young people and families to develop safer relationships with water
- Build awareness around drowning prevention throughout the year
Most importantly, an annual event creates continuity.
One workshop can introduce a skill. One competition can demonstrate a skill. But a community that meets, learns and practices together every year has a much greater opportunity to develop a lasting culture of water safety.
From competition to community
At The Mountain Tribe, we see the competition as one part of a much bigger community journey.
Our contribution does not need to start or end on competition day.
We want to help create opportunities for people to meet first, learn together, practice together and eventually participate in community activities together.
This can begin with simple water-safety introduction sessions, followed by practical workshops such as:
- Water Safety 101
- Swimming and self-awareness around open water
- SUP and kayak safety
- Basic rescue awareness
- Rescue equipment familiarization
- Paddlecraft rescue techniques
- First aid and emergency response
- Navigation and environmental awareness
- Responsible outdoor and water recreation

From these workshops, communities can gradually develop toward larger community events, skill-sharing sessions and rescue activities.
The goal is not simply to create better paddlers or stronger competitors.
The goal is to create more aware, better-prepared and more responsible water users.
Tri An Lake: A place for outdoor experiences and learning
Tri An Lake is increasingly becoming an important destination for outdoor recreation and experiential activities in Dong Nai.
Kayaking, SUP, swimming, camping and other water-based activities can provide valuable opportunities for people to connect with nature and with one another.
But greater participation also means greater responsibility.
At a natural lake, conditions can change. Weather, wind, currents, visibility, distance from shore, equipment and individual experience can all affect safety.
That is why water safety education at Tri An Lake should develop alongside the growth of outdoor recreation.
For The Mountain Tribe, this is closely connected to our broader approach to outdoor education: Experience → Reflect → Understand → Apply → Grow.
People learn not only by hearing about safety, but by experiencing situations, reflecting on what happened, understanding the principles behind them and applying those lessons in future activities.
The Mountain Tribe’s commitment to water safety
The Mountain Tribe is committed to contributing what we can to the development of water safety and drowning prevention at Tri An Lake.
Through community workshops, outdoor skills sessions and community events, we want to contribute our experience in outdoor education, paddlesports and experiential learning to help create more opportunities for people to learn.
Our approach is simple:
Build the community first.
Build the skills together.
Create safer experiences together.
We see community events as an important bridge between education and real-world practice.
They allow people to meet others who share the same interests, learn from experienced practitioners, test their skills and develop the confidence to continue learning.
Looking ahead
The 2026 Drowning Rescue Swimming Competition is one milestone, not the destination.
We hope to see this annual event continue to grow as a platform for water safety education, drowning prevention, rescue skills and community connection in Dong Nai.
And we hope to contribute not only by showing up for the competition, but by being present throughout the year — through workshops, skills learning, outdoor experiences and community activities around Tri An Lake.
Because water safety is not something we should remember only when an emergency happens.
It is something we build before the emergency happens.
And that is why building a community that learns, practices and looks after one another matters.
