TMT BUILD & REFLECT™: Simple Tools for Experiential Learning in Schools and Corporate Training

TMT BUILD & REFLECT™: Simple Tools for Experiential Learning in Schools and Corporate Training

Build Ideas. Share Perspectives. Create Meaning.

Experiential learning does not always require sophisticated equipment, expensive facilities or an outdoor adventure.

Sometimes, a few simple building pieces, wooden blocks, ropes, natural materials and the right questions can create surprisingly powerful learning experiences.

That is the idea behind TMT BUILD & REFLECT™, one of The Mountain Tribe’s in-house experiential education and corporate training programmes.

The concept is simple:

Build → Share → Reflect → Connect → Apply → Transfer

But the learning can go much deeper.

What is TMT BUILD & REFLECT™?

TMT BUILD & REFLECT™ is a hands-on learning programme that uses building, visual thinking, storytelling, facilitated reflection and collaborative problem-solving to help participants make their ideas visible.

Instead of asking participants only to talk about concepts such as:

  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Communication
  • Trust
  • Creativity
  • Problem-solving
  • Community
  • Future thinking

participants are invited to build something that represents their thinking.

They then explain their model, listen to different perspectives, reflect on what they discovered and connect the experience to real situations.

The physical materials are simply the medium.

The learning is the purpose.

Why Use Simple Tools?

One of the strengths of BUILD & REFLECT™ is its simplicity.

Participants do not need advanced technical skills to take part. A model does not need to be beautiful, technically perfect or realistic.

What matters is the meaning behind it.

A simple structure can represent:

🧱 A personal challenge
🌉 A relationship
🪢 A connection
🏔️ A goal
🌳 A community
🔄 A changing system
🚧 A barrier
🚀 A future possibility

This makes the activity accessible to different ages, backgrounds and learning styles.

It also removes some of the pressure associated with traditional classroom discussion or corporate presentations.

Participants are not simply asked to give the right answer.

They are invited to construct, explain, question and reflect.

The BUILD & REFLECT™ Learning Cycle

The programme follows a structured experiential learning cycle.

1. BUILD

Participants turn an idea, experience or challenge into a physical model.

2. SHARE

Participants explain what they built and what it means to them.

3. REFLECT

The facilitator helps participants explore what they noticed, felt and discovered.

4. CONNECT

Participants compare perspectives and identify relationships between ideas.

5. APPLY

The group connects the learning to a real situation.

6. TRANSFER

Participants identify what they will take beyond the session.

This final stage is particularly important.

A successful experiential learning activity should not end when the materials are packed away.

The learning should continue in the classroom, workplace, team or community.

Why Is It Suitable for In-House School Programmes?

Schools increasingly need learning experiences that complement academic knowledge with communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, resilience and life skills.

TMT BUILD & REFLECT™ can be delivered directly within the school environment without requiring students to travel to an external camp or specialised facility.

1. It fits the school timetable

The programme can be designed as:

  • 60-minute sessions
  • 90-minute workshops
  • 2–3 hour learning blocks
  • Half-day programmes
  • Full-day experiential learning
  • Multi-session school programmes

This makes it easier for schools to integrate experiential learning into existing schedules.

2. It works indoors

A classroom, multipurpose room, library, hall or covered outdoor space can become a learning environment.

Schools do not necessarily need:

  • A camp
  • A specialised laboratory
  • Outdoor adventure equipment
  • A large sports field

The learning can start with what is already available.

3. It complements academic learning

BUILD & REFLECT™ can support subjects and themes including:

STEAM | Global Citizenship | Leadership | Sustainability | Wellbeing | Communication | Entrepreneurship | Design Thinking | Social-Emotional Learning

For example, students can build a model representing a community affected by environmental change, then explore the relationships between people, resources and the environment.

The activity becomes a bridge between knowledge and experience.

4. It gives students a voice

Traditional classroom discussion can sometimes favour students who are already confident speakers.

Building creates another pathway for expression.

A student can first construct an idea, then use the model as a visual reference when explaining it.

This can help create more opportunities for:

Thinking → Making → Speaking → Listening → Reflecting

5. It supports different learning approaches

Students can engage through:

  • Hands-on construction
  • Visual representation
  • Storytelling
  • Discussion
  • Collaboration
  • Reflection
  • Problem-solving

The same challenge can therefore produce different forms of participation and expression.

Why Is It Suitable for Corporate Training?

The same principles that help students explore teamwork and leadership can also be powerful for adults.

In corporate environments, BUILD & REFLECT™ can be used for:

Team Building

What makes our team work well?

Leadership Development

What does effective leadership look like?

Communication

How do different people interpret the same situation?

Strategy

What should our organisation look like in the future?

Change Management

What happens when one part of our system changes?

Organisational Culture

What behaviours represent the culture we want to create?

Problem Solving

How can we see a complex problem differently?

From Team Building to Team Thinking

Corporate team building is sometimes associated with games, competitions or entertainment.

TMT BUILD & REFLECT™ takes a different approach.

The objective is not simply:

“Have fun together.”

The objective can be:

Experience → Discuss → Understand → Apply

A team might build a model of its current organisation, identify barriers between different functions, and then collaboratively construct a representation of the organisation they want to become.

The physical model becomes a shared object for conversation.

Instead of discussing an abstract issue only through words, the team can see relationships, dependencies and different perspectives.

A Powerful Tool for In-House Learning

One of the biggest advantages of BUILD & REFLECT™ is that it can be brought directly to the organisation.

For schools:

TMT → School → Students → Teachers → Learning Community

For companies:

TMT → Workplace → Teams → Leaders → Organisation

This makes it particularly suitable for in-house programmes.

The organisation does not need to recreate an external adventure environment.

Instead, TMT brings a structured experiential learning methodology into the existing environment.

The Materials Can Change

TMT BUILD & REFLECT™ is not dependent on one specific type of building material.

Depending on the programme, participants may use:

🧱 Construction bricks
🪵 Wooden blocks
🪢 Rope and connectors
🌿 Natural materials
📦 Recycled materials
🧩 Mixed tactile objects
🏗️ Large-scale construction materials

This flexibility allows facilitators to adapt the programme to:

Age → Learning objective → Group → Environment → Time → Context

For younger learners, large and tactile materials may be appropriate.

For leadership programmes, abstract materials and collaborative models may be more effective.

For outdoor education, natural materials can connect the activity directly to place-based learning.

Simple Tools. Professional Facilitation.

The simplicity of the materials should not be confused with simplicity of the methodology.

The quality of BUILD & REFLECT™ depends heavily on facilitation.

A trained facilitator needs to know when to:

  • Give instructions
  • Step back
  • Observe
  • Ask questions
  • Listen
  • Challenge assumptions
  • Manage group dynamics
  • Protect participant voice
  • Facilitate reflection
  • Connect experience to real life

The facilitator does not tell participants what their models mean.

The participant owns the meaning of their model.

This principle creates space for different perspectives and helps prevent the activity from becoming a simple craft exercise.

From Activity to Learning

The most important question after an experiential activity is not:

“Did you enjoy it?”

It is:

“What did you learn, and what will you do differently because of it?”

That is why reflection and transfer are built into the TMT approach.

Participants move from:

What did I build?

to:

What does it mean?

to:

What did I discover?

to:

How does this connect to my reality?

to:

What will I do next?

That is where a simple building activity can become an educational experience.

A Different Way to Learn

At The Mountain Tribe, we believe that experiential education does not always have to be complicated.

Sometimes, the most useful tools are the simplest ones.

A few pieces can become a bridge.

A rope can become a relationship.

A block can become a challenge.

A model can become a conversation.

And a conversation can become a new way of thinking.
