Master Class Training at Outward Bound School

He honed his technical skills in various outdoor adventure activities at the Outward Bound School in Vietnam. Here, he completed an intensive 8-month Outdoor Education Instructor Training program led by professionals and experts from Outward Bound Schools worldwide. This master class training provided advanced training for outdoor education instructors, equipping him with a comprehensive skill set. As a Lead Instructor, Đặng Minh conducted outdoor education courses for diverse participants, gaining invaluable experience in the process.

Professional Roles and Contributions

Returning to Ho Chi Minh City, Đặng Minh served as the Activity Manager of Ta Lai Experience, a community-based tourism project in Cat Tien National Park, Dong Nai. Here, he played a crucial role in developing and managing activities that integrated community involvement and outdoor education. Additionally, he led and collaborated to run numerous school trips for prestigious international schools in Vietnam, including ISHCMC, ISHCMC-AA, AUIS, RISS, French schools, SSIS, EIS, The Asian School, CAS, AISVN, TAS, BISHCMC, BISHN, BVISHCMC, World Challenges, University of Montana, VUS, Yola, ILA… These collaborations highlight his ability to design and implement educational programs that meet the diverse needs of international students.

The Birth of The Mountain Tribe

The COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point for Đặng Minh. After two years of reflection and planning, he decided it was time to start a new venture. Thus, The Mountain Tribe was born – a company by a Vietnamese for Vietnamese. His vision was to connect with like-minded friends, teachers, trainers, and business partners to promote outdoor education and experiential learning to students across Vietnam and beyond.

Big Challenges Ahead

One of the biggest challenges Đặng Minh faces now is integrating all outdoor education concepts into traditional school trips. These trips often focus on the activities themselves but miss a crucial step called the “debriefing session.” This session is essential for transforming experiences and lessons from the trip into applicable real-life skills, thereby contributing to the students’ long-term learning journey. Ensuring that each trip includes this reflective practice is vital for maximizing the educational impact of outdoor adventures.

Another significant challenge is establishing national operation standards for all outdoor adventure activities. Currently, international outdoor skill training certificates are almost not accepted by the Vietnamese government and the Department of Education and Tourism yet. All programs and services must strictly follow the guidelines of TCVN (Vietnamese Standards) in adventure tourism and regionally recognized training courses where The Mountain Tribe operates. Đặng Minh is actively researching to develop tailored three-level training programs for Outdoor Leaders, combining international technical skills training with TCVN standards. This initiative aims to create a standardized approach that meets both international and national requirements, ensuring safety and quality in outdoor education.

Promoting Vietnam’s Natural Beauty

Đặng Minh is passionate about showcasing the beauty of Vietnam through adventure-based learning. He aims to create school trips with clear educational outcomes, helping expat students and international schools discover Vietnam’s natural wonders and cultural richness. The Mountain Tribe is set to launch new adventure-based learning expeditions across Vietnam’s three main regions: the Northern Highlands, Central regions, and the Southern Mekong Delta. These 4-week-long expeditions will offer unique experiences that highlight the diverse landscapes and cultural heritage of Vietnam. Each trip is designed to provide participants with a profound connection to nature and a deeper understanding of the country’s rich history and traditions.
