Our policies / People & culture
Equity.
Diversity.
Inclusion.
An outdoor learning environment where people are respected, barriers are addressed, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute and grow.
Our commitment
The outdoors should open doors.
The Mountain Tribe (TMT) is committed to fostering equity, diversity and inclusion in our outdoor education programs and operations. We recognize that every person brings distinct strengths, perspectives and experiences.
We work to create a welcoming and supportive environment where people are treated with dignity, can participate meaningfully, and are empowered to learn and grow. This policy guides our program design, recruitment, staff conduct and engagement with participants and local communities.
Fair opportunity
Recognize different needs and work to reduce barriers to access and participation.
Value difference
Respect varied backgrounds, perspectives, identities, abilities and lived experiences.
Belonging in practice
Build conditions where people can participate, contribute and be heard safely.
Purpose
This policy sets out how TMT seeks to make outdoor education more equitable and inclusive. We aim to:
- Support fair participation regardless of race, gender, nationality, socioeconomic status, age, disability, sexual orientation or other personal characteristics.
- Build a culture of respect, fairness and curiosity in which differences are valued.
- Identify and, where reasonably practicable, reduce financial, social, physical and logistical barriers to participation.
- Encourage continuous learning, reflection and improvement among staff, participants and community partners.
Guiding principles
Inclusion
We welcome participation and create opportunities for people to engage, share experiences and contribute to the group.
Equity
Fairness may require different forms of support. We consider individual needs and work to address barriers without compromising essential safety requirements.
Respect & dignity
We expect people to treat one another with consideration and without degrading, intimidating or discriminatory behaviour.
Cultural sensitivity
We respect the histories, knowledge, traditions and perspectives of participants, staff and local communities.
Accessibility
We assess the accessibility of activities and environments, discuss support needs in advance and explore reasonable adaptations.
Safety & choice
We support informed participation and individual choice while maintaining appropriate risk management and safeguarding standards.
Actions & commitments
EDI is part of how we plan, deliver and review our work—not only a statement of intent.
A. Recruitment & staffing
- Seek to make recruitment fair and welcoming to candidates from different backgrounds and identities.
- Promote staff learning on inclusion, cultural awareness, bias, safeguarding and respectful conduct.
- Provide opportunities for professional development and invite reflection on how team practices affect others.
B. Participant outreach & engagement
- Engage with a broad range of schools, communities and organizations to widen awareness of our programs.
- Explore financial assistance, transport support or other practical adjustments where resources and program conditions allow.
- Use communications and promotional materials that represent people and communities respectfully and avoid stereotypes.
C. Program design & delivery
- Design activities with varied needs, experience levels and learning styles in mind.
- Offer meaningful opportunities to learn from local cultures, histories, knowledge and perspectives, with respect for community consent and context.
- Gather feedback and review whether participants are experiencing fair opportunities to learn, contribute and belong.
D. Physical accessibility & accommodations
- Assess relevant terrain, facilities, equipment and activity demands when planning a program.
- Invite participants to share access requirements in advance and discuss appropriate assistance, adaptive equipment or alternative activities.
- Explain material access or safety limitations transparently and explore options rather than making assumptions about an individual’s abilities.
E. Discrimination, harassment & bullying
- Discrimination, harassment, bullying and retaliation against anyone who raises a concern are not tolerated.
- Concerns should be taken seriously, handled respectfully and shared only with those who need the information to respond, as far as practicable.
- Responses will consider the safety and wellbeing of the people involved, the nature of the concern and applicable organizational procedures and law.
- Where a breach is established, appropriate corrective or disciplinary action may be taken in line with applicable procedures.
Review & continuous improvement
- Review this policy periodically and when significant changes to programs, operations or relevant requirements make a review necessary.
- Invite feedback from participants, staff and community stakeholders and use it to improve program design and delivery.
- Encourage ongoing staff development on equity, diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness.
- Seek partnerships that strengthen inclusive outdoor education and responsible community engagement.
- Communicate this policy to relevant staff and program participants and make it available for reference.
The Mountain Tribe
Belonging is built through action.
We believe outdoor education can bring people together, bridge divides and inspire positive change. We commit to learning, listening and improving how we make that possible.
